While companies such as Apple and Facebook are launching products to help us manage our screen time, some of the biggest food chains in the US are already rewarding students for taking a break from their phones.
Pocket Points is a mobile app which gives college and school students points in return for locking their phone while on campus. Those points can be exchanged for gifts and special deals at Papa John’s, Krispy Kreme and Jamba Juice, among others. The app uses location tracking to ensure students are on campus. It has been embraced by universities as a way to tackle the issue of students being distracted by their devices during class. Meanwhile, brands see the app as an opportunity to reach the valuable student demographic.
As digital natives, Gen Z are impacted more than other generations by the digital addiction epidemic and the anxiety caused by the constant pressure to be connected. According to a 2017 report, 80% would give up television, 64% would give up gaming, and 28% would even give up their friends in order to remain connected to their smartphone. However, they are aware of their obsession and its negative impact, and there is a growing trend towards digital detoxing. Many products are popping up to help make this possible, from the Light Phone to Flux and Cold Turkey.
