On Friday 24th June, the Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade after a 5-4 vote, rescinding the Constitutional right to abortion upheld by Roe v. Wade for nearly fifty years. Today, we take a look at what’s happening in the US, discuss how Gen Zers are reacting to the news and share the companies that are supporting their employees’ access to abortion.

What’s happening in the US?

With the legality of abortion now resting on the individual states, abortion rights will roll back in nearly half the states immediately, with more restrictions likely to come. 13 states have had ‘trigger laws’ already in place for years to restrict or illegalize abortion in the absence of Roe v. Wade. For states such as Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Utah, this means immediate bans or severe restrictions on what abortions can be performed. For other states such as Idaho, Tennessee, Wyoming, and North Dakota, that means similar bans or restrictions within the next month.

How is Gen Z reacting to the news?

Gen Zers are not simply reacting with anger  – they are, according to one article, ‘ready to protest, volunteer, donate, and get fuc*king loud.’ Following a survey in partnership with YouGov, Cosmopolitan revealed that Gen Z is more pro-abortion than any other generation. 2 out of 3 Gen Zers identify themselves as pro-choice – 20% higher than the national average, and ‘nine in 10 believe they have the power to make a significant impact when it comes to safe abortion access.’ As we wrote in our US Youth Trends Report*, 50% of Gen Z have suggested that their generation is more likely to stand up for the rights of others than previous generations.

Voxburner reported that 73% of Gen Z describe themselves as activists, and young people across the country (and world) are organizing protests, donating to abortion funds, running for office, and proactively challenging their friends and family who don’t believe in a person’s right to choose, as well as much more. This news may also mean that we’ll see more Gen Zers than ever at the ballot box on election day, with almost three-quarters of Gen Zers believing that voting for politicians who share their views on abortion is one of the best ways to create change. For the vast majority, Gen Z is fighting back against the decision in every way they know how.

The companies supporting their employees

Meanwhile, companies across America are being praised for supporting their employees following this news, with a number of them paying for travel costs to ensure that those who want an abortion still have access to a safe and legal one.

Here are 5 companies who are fighting alongside Gen Z to support their employees after this historic decision:

Disney

  • Will cover the cost of travel for employees who cannot access abortion and other family planning services.

Patagonia

  •  Will cover the cost of insurance, lodging, and food for all employees (including part-time workers) where abortion care is restricted.
  • Will offer bail for employees arrested for peacefully protesting abortion rights.

Lyft and Uber

  • Announced plans to cover rides for women in Texas and Oklahoma to seek abortion care.
  • Will pay legal fees for drivers sued for helping women pursue care.

Kroger

  • Will offer travel benefits up to $4,000 for abortion and family planning services for those insured under company plan.

JP Morgan

Effective 1 July, JP Morgan will cover travel expenses for employees travelling to other states for abortion care.

And a shoutout to the other companies covering their employees’ travel expenses: Accenture, Adobe, Airbnb, Bank of America, Box, Buzzfeed, Civitech, Condé Nast, Dick’s Sporting Goods, DoorDash, Douglas Elliman, Expedia, Google, H&M, Impossible Foods, Intuit, Johnson & Johnson, Levi Strauss, Match Group, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Nike, Nordstrom, Open Sea, PayPal, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Reddit, Salesforce, Starbucks, Tesla, Vox Media, Warner Brothers, Wells Fargo, Yelp and Zillow.

Acting on a business level to support your employees is an enormous step in the right direction, however we know this isn’t always possible, and you may have to act as an individual. Depending on where you’re located, there are a number of different ways that you can.
